When it comes to mini sessions, there are many elements photographers need to take into account. One of these elements is the use of props. While some photographers swear by props, others believe it’s better to leave them out of mini sessions altogether. In this blog post, we’re going to explore why I don’t use them for mini sessions and provide some tips for creating impactful mini sessions without relying on unnecessary additions. Check out the platform we prefer for booking out our mini sessions here.
They Can Distract From Your Subject
One of the biggest drawbacks of using props for mini sessions is that they can be distracting. Instead of allowing your clients to be the focus of the photo, they can draw the eye away from them and onto the prop. This is especially true for props that are bright, bold, or unusual. Instead of relying on additional pieces to make your mini sessions stand out, focus on capturing the unique personality and style of your clients.
They Can be Expensive
Another downside of using props for mini sessions is that they can be expensive. Unless you have a vast collection of props, you will need to invest money in purchasing for each session. This can quickly add up, and the costs can eat into your profits. Instead of using props to enhance your photos, invest in quality lighting, camera gear, and editing software that will allow you to capture stunning images without breaking the bank.
Props Can be Unnecessary
In many cases, they are unnecessary for mini sessions. While they might add a touch of whimsy or creativity, they aren’t essential for capturing beautiful and compelling images. Rather than relying on props, focus on creating a vibe or mood that will enhance your subject’s natural beauty. This can be achieved through a variety of techniques, including lighting, posing, wardrobe, and even location.
Props Can be Inconvenient
Finally, using them for mini sessions can be inconvenient. Not only do you need to transport the additional things to and from the session, but you also need to set them up and break them down. This can be time-consuming and may take away from the time you have to spend capturing images of your subject. Instead, focus on creating a streamlined and efficient workflow that will allow you to capture stunning images without wasting time on unnecessary props.
While props can be a fun addition to some photography sessions, they are often unnecessary, distracting, expensive, and inconvenient. For mini sessions, focusing on your client’s personality and style will allow you to capture beautiful images that will stand the test of time. By following these tips you can take your mini sessions to the next level without relying on extra things. Happy shooting!
